Papers of George W. Buswell, 1862-1888.

Fair copies of Buswell's war diaries created probably in the 1870s or 1880s, his military document (orders, muster-in and muster-out rolls, his oath of office, and a certificate of payment). The diaries cover the period from Aug. 13 1862 to Dec. 31. 1864 and describe Buswell's enlistment, training at Fort Release and Fort Snelling; Sibley's campaign against Sioux, including the march to relief of Fort Ridgly and the engagement at Wood Lake (Sept. 23); frontier duty near Mankato, Minn.; Sibley's Dakota expedition, including the action at Big Mound (July 24), Dead Buffalo Lake (July 26), and Stony Lake (July 28); stay in St. Louis and appointment to the 68th Regiment; move to Memphis, Tenn.; Smith's Expedition to Tupelo, Miss., including battles of Camargo's Cross Roads (July 13) and Tupelo (July 14-15); and service at Fort Pickering, Tenn. The entries also discuss, in great detail, war and political news, Negro troops, his studies for the exams, attending sermons and Bible studies, news from home, etc.

George W. Buswell (b. ca 1842), a native of Stockton, Winona Co., Minn., enlisted in Co. B. of the 7th Regiment of Minnesota Infantry in August of 1862. The regiment assiged to Sibley's expedition against Sioux Indians in the fall of 1862. Then the regiment was posted on frontier duty, and in June of 1863 took part in Sibley's expedition to Dakota Territory.
